Psoriasis Q & A
What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a skin condition that develops as a result of an overproduction of new skin cells. In most people, it takes about a month from the time a skin cell forms until it reaches the very top layer of skin and flakes off. This constant renewal process helps skin stay healthy and promotes proper healing. But when the renewal cycle is “sped up” as in psoriasis, surface skin cells don't have a chance to shed properly, and thick, reddish, scaly patches called psoriatic plaques begin to form.
What are the symptoms of psoriasis?
The symptoms of psoriasis can vary from one person to the next, but some of the most common ones include:
itching which becomes worse during flareups or after sun exposure
bleeding when patches are scratched or bumped
scaling or crusting on the scalp
pitted or discolored fingernails
joint pain (psoriatic arthritis)
The scaly plaque formations often (but not always) occur on both sides of the body – when one elbow is affected, usually the other one becomes affected as well.
Can psoriasis be spread from one person to another?
No, psoriasis cannot be “caught” or spread.
How can my psoriasis be treated?
The first step in treating psoriasis is ensuring you get an accurate diagnosis. Some other skin conditions and even certain medications can cause similar symptoms. Dr. Bhatia is skilled in making the proper diagnosis so you get the most appropriate treatment. Once the diagnosis of psoriasis is made, Dr. Bhatia can review all your treatment options with you, including topical lotions and creams, oral medications and even phototherapy, which uses light energy to help reduce or resolve symptoms. Psoriasis cannot be cured, and you may need more than one type of treatment to keep your symptoms under control.
