Botox Q & A

How does BOTOX work?

BOTOX is a neuromuscular agent, which means it affects the nerves that control some of the muscles of your face – specifically, the ones in your upper face that you use during facial expressions like smiling and frowning. BOTOX temporarily blocks the signals between muscles in the upper face and the brain, so when you make an expression, the muscles do not receive the brain's instructions to contract. When muscles don't contract, they don't pull on the skin – the action that causes wrinkles and lines to form.

Can BOTOX be used anywhere on the face?

No, BOTOX is only useful for treating dynamic wrinkles – wrinkles that form as a result of facial expressions – on the forehead (rhytids), between the eyebrows (glabellar folds) and at the corners of the eyes (crow's feet).

What is the procedure like?

First, Dr. Bhatia will determine the best placement for the injections based on your cosmetic issues and your anatomy. After cleansing the area, BOTOX will be injected using a very fine needle. Usually, more than one injection is needed to ensure BOTOX spreads evenly throughout the treatment area. Because the needles are very fine, most patients report very little to no discomfort. The entire procedure takes just a few minutes and you can go back to your regular activities afterward.

How soon will I see results?

Immediately after your treatment, the injection sites may be red or swollen, effects that will resolve soon afterward. The initial effects of your treatment will be visible within a few days and will become more apparent during the next few months.

How long will it be before I need a touch-up treatment?

Most patients find they can maintain the effects of BOTOX treatment by having touch-ups every four to six months.
